It is said there are no mistakes as to where we are ultimately led in life—that there are sometimes unknown reasons behind our choices. And we often do not recognize the path we’re on until we arrive at its destination. So it has been with Laurie and John, the proprietors of a new business on Chase’s main street. Quasi-hippies at heart, being slightly unconventional yet adventurous, the couple’s enterprise evolved almost by chance, rather than by design, when they were looking for a space where John could restore period furniture. During their search, a new venture began to take shape for them, in the form of a retail operation that involved their love of memorabilia and antiques—and with a name that reflected unique specialities, days gone by, affinity for memories. Gypsy Soul opened its doors in September 2020.The shop’s diverse and unique inventory includes antique furniture in chairs, bedroom suites, footstools end tables, lamps, brass/copper/silver and glassware, artwork and collectibles such as LP records—a large and varied selection of vintage vinyl—as well as some classic jewellery, purses and clothing items—all at reasonable prices. John also offers furnishing restoration and refinishing, and they’ve brought in a stock of essential oils sourced from a BC supplier. Future plans are to take certain items on the road, in order to offer mobile shopping on specific days in the area from spring to fall.
Having clients reminisce through the artefacts found at Gypsy Soul, as fond memories are recalled, is particularly gratifying to its entrepreneurs. Laurie and John recognize that articles from times long gone are satisfying and important—to the head and to the heart. All antiques exude history, have a story, and speak of the past. The couple’s enjoyment in the business is readily evident in the memory-lane music always playing in the store, their ready smiles, and warm welcome to customers and visitors. Oh, and if area residents have vintage articles needing a new, appreciative home, Gypsy Soul just might be able to help with that.
